Kids' Catalog

Along with our normal Christmas Mission Projects, we are also doing a Kids Catalog this Holiday season. Kids can buy anything from a hot meal for a homeless person all the way up to buying a goat for a family in Africa. We have been passing out the catalogs for the past few weeks with an envelope attached. Bring back that envelope with the money inside for the item you want and your grade gets 1 point towards their count. At the end of December the grade with the most collected envelopes get a celebration party!! Envelope totals are shown on the scoreboard near the main stairs in Grade School. Extra envelopes can be found at the All Star Store or from one of the teacher. They can be dropped off in the wrapped boxes in the bible study rooms or Kidstown. Good luck to every grade!!!

Fall is finally here!

Dear Parents and Preteens,

We have had many new and exciting things happening in our ministry! Some new projects are underway and when they are all squared away I will be sure to share them with you. This is such an exciting time of year and hopefully God has some great things in store for us in the next few weeks. I apologize for taking so long to update the blog. I recently got married and took a little time off in order to celebrate! Here are some fun things that are starting up in our ministry.

  • A few weeks ago we had a parent meeting about starting our online section of our weekend Grapple curriculum. We had over 80 kids represented that are now logged on and doing Grapple online! If you and your child are interested in learning more about this or want to get started, please contact me and we will get you all set up!
  • We have now started our Wednesday night Extra Innings program. We have about 35-40 4th and 5th graders diving deeper into the bible in small groups every Wednesday. Soon our Extra Inning kids will be taking a few mission based trips out into our community to serve those in need. These activities are open to anyone who wants to be involved. More information and dates will soon be available.
  • We are THRILLED to announce that we have hired a new Children's Pastor!! Mr. Trent Worsham is making the switch from being the Small Group Pastor, over in Pier 419, to now being the pastor of all the Children's Ministry. If you have not met Trent before, you are in for a treat. He is and energetic Christ follower and has some amazing ideas for this Ministry. His official first day will be November 1st, so please show him a warm welcome into Children's!
  • We have been brainstorming a few names for our Preteen Ministry. A lot of people don't like the term "Preteen" so we are trying to liven it up a little bit. We have a few names in mind and will soon be announcing our final decision!
  • This coming week during class we will be discussing what God's opinion is on watching bad TV and movies. Even since I was growing up, the shows on television have changed a lot [and not for the best]. We will be touching on how God feels about what we watch. Also, we will be participating in an activity that ties in with the Blessing emphasis that will be discussed in services this weekend. The kids will be receiving coins to fill out with names and examples of how they have been blessed. The teachers will be talking about what it means to be blessed and how they can in-turn bless others. They will also be supplied with a few bible verses that talk about the importance of being blessed. They are encouraged to give their coins to be people that have blessed them.
  • In a few weeks we will be taking some suggestions for "Hot Topics" from the kids. A lot of our kids have had some deep questions that our teachers don't feel like they can fully answer in the time allowed. We will be taking some questions from the kids to answer at a later time. We hope this will help us better reach your child with questions they are having.
  • Fall Festival is Friday, October 23rd at the Rockwall Campus! We would love for you and your family to join in the fun!
Please let us know how the Preteen and Children's Ministry can better serve you in the future. Feel free to either contact me or my assistant Elizabeth Hammond [elizabethh@lakepointe.org] with any questions or suggestions!

Preteen Parent Meeting

We have survived 3 weeks of the new promotion year! I am happy to announce that we have had some near record breaking attendance in our Children's Ministry the past few weekends! This is such an encouragement and we hope we keep the numbers high! We have a few events in the coming weeks that I want to let you know about.

September 16th we start our Extra Innings program from 7- 8 PM. We are hoping to have more kids than last year sign up! If you are interested, but do not know how to register please read the post before this one to get all of the details. Please do not hesitate to contact our Grade School Team, or myself, if you have any questions regarding this program.

We are having a Preteen Parent Meeting in two weeks! On either September 19th or September 20th we will have a meeting to discuss what we are doing in our Preteen Ministry along with talking about making our weekend Grapple curriculum available online during the week. Right now we are only using the curriculum during the weekend and would love to show you and your child how to log on and get plugged into Grapple during the week. We hope that this keeps parents more informed about what is going on during the weekend. If your child is wanting to do the online program, please come to room C210 at either 7:15 PM on the 19th or at either 9:30 or 11:00 on the 20th. This meeting will only last 15- 20 minutes! Here is what the postcard going home with your kids, this weekend, will look like (Click on the image to make is larger)! Also, be looking for an e-mail with more details.

In our lessons we have been discussing the dynamics of families and why we act the way we do. This coming weekend we will be touching on how we can put other above ourselves. We will be discussing how Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us and how in turn we can be less selfish and more focused on others and our God. A lot of 4th and 5th graders forget that the world doesn't revolve around them :) We hope to touch base with those tendencies in this lesson.

First Week Complete!

We just finished our promotion weekend! This past weekend from birth through 5th grade, Lake Pointe, Rockwall, saw 2,218 kids!! We were so happy, yet a little overwhelmed, by how many kids were here. Just in 4th and 5th grade alone we saw a total of 320 kids! Our volunteers really stepped up to the plate and made this a successful promotion. I can't thank them enough. Here's what is happening soon in our Ministry-

This week’s focus is on the dynamics of everyone family. This lesson will shed light on the fact that no one’s family is perfect and we all have things to work on. Mainly we will be talking about the relationship of Cain and Abel and how their decisions affected the entire family. We understand that each families dynamics are different and will do our best of talk about different issues that may face a family without pointing anyone out and using them as an example.

Also going on is registration for Extra Innings! In large group the kids will hear a little about Extra Innings and its purpose and will also be given the chance to grab a registration form. Your child my either apply that way or by going online to http://lpkidsrw.lakepointe.org/Parents/gradeschool_programs.aspx to sign up! We will have our kick-off September 16th at 7:00 PM in room C217.

We look forward to a new and exciting year in our Preteen Ministry!

Here we go!

Hey guys! My name is Angela Hokanson and I am the Children's Ministry associate for our preteen ministry here at Lake Pointe. I graduated in 2008 from the University Mary Hardin-Baylor down near Temple, Texas. I have been at Lake Pointe since this past November and I am loving every minute of it. I am currently in the transitional phase of learning everything about what our preteens do and how we can improve this ministry for the future. Here are some of the different activities that I am involved in that your preteen student can be apart of!

  • Weekend Bible Study- 4th and 5th grade have 3 different bible study times offered for them. We meet Saturdays at 7:15 PM and Sundays at 9:30 and 11:00. Each of the times offer a one hour bible study time. They all meet at first for a large group time that usually involves fun games and activities that will tie into what we are learning in our small group time. Our small group time consists of gender specific groups lead by a teacher and usually 8-10 kids. We like to keep the groups fairly small so that they can have a more one-on-one interaction with the teacher.
  • Extra Innings- Starting September 16th we begin a Wednesday night event called Extra Innings. This is for our kids that would like an extra time of bible study and fellowship throughout the week. We meet at 7:00 PM in room C217 from September until May. This program is just geared towards the 4th and 5th graders. Similar to the weekend bible study, each small group is gender specific and also a smaller tight knit group. We really like the groups to grow in the walk with the Lord and have a connection not only with their teacher, but also their fellow peers. Apart from the Extra Inning program is a mission trip offered for our 5th grade students. If you would like more information about this, please read the bullet point below.
You can register your child for Extra Innings here: http://lpkidsrw.lakepointe.org/Parents/gradeschool_programs.aspx
  • Mission trip- This is by far one of my favorite things that we do here at Lake Pointe. We offer a trip to our 5th grade kids involved in our Extra Inning program. This past year we went to San Diego California, during spring break, to help out a new church called Ethos Church. We were able to attend their services and help them get ready for an Easter carnival that they were putting on. It was a blast and such a blessing to see young 5th graders sharing the passion and love for Christ to the people of San Diego. If you would like to hear what we did on a day to day basis you can read our San Diego Blog HERE.
  • VBS and Beach Blast- We just finished an amazing week of VBS, June 15-19. We had over 2,000 kids and hundreds of volunteers here at Lake Pointe for Vacation Bible School. We offer VBS for our 4th graders and for the 5th graders we offer Beach Blast. Beach Blast is held over in the youth building (Pier 419). This allows the 5th graders a special time as one of their last events in the Children's Ministry. VBS is held from 8:45 AM-12 PM each day and is full of snacks, worship, bible study, craft, rec and fun!
  • Preteen camp- Camp is almost here!! We will be going to Glenrose, Texas to camp July 17-21. This is an over night camp where we load up buses full of hundreds of kids and leaders for a few days to encounter God and have a great time doing it! The kids will be staying in cabins with their gender and grade. This year's theme is Fuel so every group is a different gasoline company (ex.- Shell/ Mobil). The kids will enjoy doing crafts, playing rec games and on inflatables, worshiping with a great band and speaker, doing daily devotional times with their group, swimming, and of course enjoying tons of food just to name a few. I can't wait to go!!
The purpose of this blog is to inform our preteen parents and students about what is going on in our ministry. I will give updates about what we will be talking about in our bible study hours and also the events that are taking place around Lake Pointe's Grade School Department. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you have about our ministry.

-Angela Hokanson
This is a blog to keep the parents of Lake Pointe Church's preteens in the know about what is going on with our 4th and 5th graders! There will be updates about new events going on in our ministry and updates about the topics that we are covering during our weekend bible studies.
